About Mass Cultural Council

The Mass Cultural Council is the state agency that promotes and funds arts, humanities, and sciences across Massachusetts. Its Folk Arts & Heritage program documents and supports living traditions carried by communities across the Commonwealth.

In 2013 the Council featured ACM in its 'Keepers of Tradition' spotlight on Dominican-style Carnaval, and in 2023 it awarded a Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grant that allowed Leonardo Mirabal to study mask making under his father, Stelvyn, and travel to the Dominican Republic to learn from renowned artisans. That support strengthened the next generation of ACM's craft.

Why community connections matter

Funding, hosting, cultural collaboration, and independent coverage each help ACM preserve its history, reach new audiences, and keep Dominican Carnaval visible across New England.
